Electrical Therapy
Interferential current therapy involves the placement of tour electrodes on the skin at a painful area or the spinal nerve root associated with a painful region. Alternating currents of medium frequency are applied through the electrodes to the area. The currents rise and fall at different frequencies. It is theorized that the low frequency of the interferential current causes inhibition of habituation of the nervous system, which results in muscle relaxation, suppression of pain and acceleration of healing.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies the interferential current stimulator as a powered muscle stimulator. It is similar to transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). However, because there is minimal skin resistance with the interferential current therapy, a maximum amount of energy goes deeper into the tissue. It also crisscrosses, as opposed to the linear application of the TENS. This crisscrossing is noted to be more effective because it serves to confuse the nerve endings. This prevents the treated area from adjusting to the current.
