Patients suffering from shoulder injuries often turn to surgery for pain relief, which can take weeks to months of rehabilitation. A new procedure called Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) eliminates the need for surgery and shortens rehabilitation time by speeding up the body’s natural healing process. Blood plasma, also known as PRP, contains a high concentration of platelets which deliver high doses of proteins that promote tissue repair and regeneration.
PRP therapy works by drawing a small amount of blood, which then undergoes a process called centrifugation. This separates the red blood cells, platelets and plasma. The PRP, which contains the healing agents, is then injected into the patient’s injured area. Because the blood used and injected is that of the patient, the procedure is completely safe and there is little to no chance of reaction to the treatment. The procedure is usually performed within one to two hours and pain relief occurs within three to four weeks, continuing to improve over a period of three to six months following treatment.
