Chronic low back pain experienced from a herniated disc or lumbar disc disease can be a crippling experience. In the treatment of these conditions, Percutaneous Laser Discectomy (PLD) is useful and advantageous. PLD can be used to treat the four types of disc herniation, including a disc bulge, a protruded or contained herniation, an extruded disc herniation or a sequestered disc herniation.
The procedure is minimally invasive, using a small needle and laser technology to vaporize the herniated disc, resulted in immediate pain relief for most patients. Because there is no cutting of muscle or bone during the procedure, recovery is fast and there is little to no scarring. Most patients return to their daily activities within one to six weeks.
A study conducted by The Spinal Foundation found that 92% of patients are satisfied with the results of PLD after one year, and 85% are satisfied with the results after three years. However, the procedure has shown to be less effective on those who have previously experienced open surgery.
